Westhills Village, a top-rated retirement community in Rapid City, is proud to celebrate 40 years of providing exceptional care and life planning services to the Black Hills. Since opening their doors in 1984, Westhills Village has evolved to meet the changing needs of those they serve, expanding their facilities and services to include apartments, villas, assisted living, health care facilities, and short-term rehab facilities as part of their network of continuing care.
A History of Care
The vision for Westhills Village was formed in 1980 when a need was observed for a continuing care retirement community in western South Dakota. Construction started on the main Westhills Village building in 1983, and in December 1984, the Westhills Village Facility opened its doors, offering both independent living and skilled nursing services.
Over the next forty years, expansion continued at a steady pace. In 1992, Westhills Village Home Health Agency was introduced, providing Rapid City with quality in-home skilled nursing and therapy services. Therapy services further expanded in 1996 when Westhills Village Therapy Services opened. Clarkson Mountain View Health Care Facility, a skilled nursing facility with accommodations for 54 residents, was purchased in 2000.
In 2003, Westhills Village began construction on The Villas, two- and three-bedroom duplexes and triplexes that offer upscale features such as vaulted ceilings and walk-in closets. In 2008, Westhills Village Clarkson Health Care began complete reconstruction, creating larger and more spacious resident suites and a state-of-the-art therapy gym for residents.
Additional expansions between 2010 and 2020 saw the addition of a swimming pool, expanded fitness center, game room and theater, 55 new apartments, a renovation of the original wings of the Health Care facility, construction of the Courtyard assisted living with 44 apartments in 2018 and the introduction of single level twin homes named The Cottages.
Expansion continues today with the ongoing planning of Westhills Village’s next project, The Terraces which will be located west of 5th street off of Shaker Drive.
Westhills Village’s commitment to staying current with the needs of retirees in the Black Hills has not been overlooked by those in the community. The non-profit retirement community has been awarded the title of “Best of the Black Hills” in multiple categories, including Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Nursing Staff, each year since 2019.
Looking to the Future
The growth at Westhills Village is credited largely to its visionary Board of Directors, which is composed of business and civic leaders who give their time, energy, and expertise to continue the mission set forth by the original board: to provide a better quality of life for people wishing to retire in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
As Westhills Village prepares for the future, the focus will remain on innovation and excellence. The evolving needs of those throughout the region will continue to be evaluated and addressed so that Black Hills retirees can enjoy their golden years with dignity, joy and grace.
CEO Tyler Donahue says , “I have worked in skilled nursing and assisted living all of my career, and Westhills is certainly the most special place I have worked. It’s obvious that the dedication of the staff, managers and board of directors have created a culture that has led to the growth and success over the years and I’m excited to for what’s to come.”
