In 1980 a vision was formed for a continuing care retirement community in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.
This model helped the Board of Directors and members of the community conceptualize the layout of our buildings as we began breaking ground.
In 1983 ground was broken for the main building at Westhills Village. Present were the original Board of Directors: Ep Howe, Dr. Bruce Allen, Jay Brink, Dick Tobias, Milo Rypkema, Larry Owen, Glenn Barber, Helene Siekman, Otto Mueller, Earl Dailey & Dr. Reuben Bareis.
Apartment construction was in full swing in 1983 as the foundation and bones of the community began to come to life.
The original marketing office was a model home for future residents of Westhills Village to tour and experience.
In 1984 the first apartments opened, and the Health Care Facility was officially completed in December of that year.
This photo of a completed Westhills Village in 1989 was used in our marketing to begin to build our community of residents and supporters.
In 1992, Westhills Village Home Health Agency was founded, offering in-home skilled nursing and therapy services.
Pictured is construction and completion of the Wetshills South Assisted Living facility which was begun in 1995 and completed in 1997 - with 31 suites just south of our main campus.
In 1996 Occupational, Speech, and Physical Therapy Services became available on site.
Clarkson Health Care facility, which was built in 1956, was purchased by Westhills Village in 2000, providing a west side Rapid City location.
2004 saw the building of a new Health Care wing which increased the number of private rooms and updated activities and dining areas.
Though construction was begun in 2003, 2006 saw all 33 Villas complete and occupied by residents who utilized all of the Westhills Village amenities from the comfort of their townhome.
In 2008 renovation began on Clarkson Health Care - a 7 million dollar project which took 24 months to complete, making Clarkson a modern facility.
In 2009 planning began for a major overhaul of the upper and lower Commons Areas. A Swimming Pool, expanded Fitness Center, Game Room and Theater were to be added. The Dining Room, pantry, woodshop and office areas were also remodeled.
The Commons construction project was well underway in 2011 - marking the creation of an updated campus for all residents to enjoy.
The beautiful state-of-the-art pool was opened in 2012 - the first of its kind in Rapid City - adding to the amenities that Westhills Village offers community members.
2012 also marked the building of 11 new apartments on our campus.
As part of our commitment to creating a beautiful community, landscaping was completed around the new apartments, including this donated bear sculpture.
In 2013 renovations began on the two original wings of our Health Care facility.
In 2015 our Therapy Department was updated and renovated along with our new and improved Health Care.
Need for a state-of-the-art assisted living facility brought about construction of The Courtyard - a 44 apartment facility just east of the main building.
Westhills Village proudly opened The Courtyard in 2018 - filling a need for a continuum of care for our residents as they transition to assisted living.
